Online sales of fireflies have run rampant with the Chinese Valentine´s Day drawing near. Over 10m of fireflies have been sold by online stores, surging by 10 times compared with last year´s 1m, according to an environmental volunteer service centre in Jiangsu. With each insect priced at RMB4-5, some retailers even offers "firefly packages" of 55 or 99 insects, as the numbers indicate "I love you" or "everlasting love" in Chinese. Experts say the fireflies sold online are mostly hunted in the wild, instead of from a breeding farm, and the booming firefly business will eventually harm the ecosystem and may result in their extinction in local areas.
