Last week brought the announcement of Android 4.4 (Kit Kat), but Google was very clear that the Galaxy Nexus wouldn’t see an official 4.4 build. That didn’t stop the community, though, as the Galaxy Nexus now has a “shiny” unofficial KitKat build for it. Still, issues have arisen with the build due to an outdated GPU driver, abandoned by Texas Instruments upon their exit from the smartphone CPU business. Breathing new life into the Galaxy Nexus’ OMAP 4 chipset, updated GPU binaries have now been found, which has developers building a new kernel which should fix all the graphical issues the Galaxy Nexus has on Kit Kat. If you still have a Galaxy Nexus, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll see that shiny new kernel, though you’ll have to be patient as they don’t tend to finish things like this overnight. Normally, Google stops supporting Nexus devices more than 18 months old, as seen when the Nexus One missed out on official Ice Cream Sandwich, the Nexus S on 4.2 Jelly Bean and now the Galaxy Nexus on 4.4 KitKat. The only difference this time is that Google designed KitKat to work on devices with as little as 512MB RAM, half that of the Galaxy Nexus, so many were expecting Google to amend its support life cycle. One possible reason that didn’t happen may be because of the lack of new binaries (the newly-discovered GPU binaries notwithstanding). |
